In mid-June the USAID-funded SIAPS program assisted the Uzbek Ministry of Health in updating their Logistics Management and Information System (LMIS) for tuberculosis (TB) treatment medicines. Originally implemented in in 2003, the paper-based system was in need of major revisions, and in-country TB drug management specialists hadn’t been trained on the LMIS in over seven years.
SIAPS helped to revise the LMIS, align the system with current international standards, and train more than 230 TB drug management specialists from 186 districts throughout Uzbekistan between May and June 2015. Following the training, the attendees demonstrated a 20% improvement in their ability to effectively use the LMIS system. The training was conducted in close collaboration with the National Tuberculosis and Lung Disease Center, the National DOTS Center, the World Health Organization, and the Global Fund TB Grant Project Implementation Unit. Additional trainings are now being planned with Doctors Without Borders in the autonomous Republic of Karakalpakstan, where the LMIS is currently being implemented.
