To take systems strengthening support to the next level, SIAPS is introducing a web-based enhanced information graphic display platform. The dashboard features data from each health facility and supply structure and will provide real-time access to patient and commodity information. The end goal is for the dashboard to be used to visualize graphic data on health programs, patient uptake, and stock status in about 1,300 health facilities in all districts of the country.

This annual report is the first of its kind for the National Tuberculosis Reference Laboratory (NTRL). The following provides a general picture of NTRL’s activities and accomplishments related to service and development in 2014. It documents the expansion of laboratory services and adoption of new technologies in the context of new developments in TB diagnosis and treatment.

In the Philippines, tuberculosis (TB) is the sixth leading cause of death, mostly affecting the poor and vulnerable populations. Stock-outs of TB medicines in public health facilities compromise treatment of patients with TB because of limited access and additional burden of out-of-pocket expenses for medicines. As part of the improvement of the overall supply chain of the TB program, SIAPS has been working with the Department of Health central office with focus on quantification, procurement, storage, distribution, and pharmacovigilance. In addition, the National TB Control Program (NTP) requested SIAPS to develop an action-oriented practical guide for TB pharmaceutical management.
This report presents results of the assessment on implementation of Auditable Pharmaceutical Transaction and Services (APTS), a package of interventions designed to improve the quality of pharmaceutical services at public health facilities. The development and implementation of this intervention has been supported by the SIAPS program, which is implemented by Management Sciences for Health (MSH) with funding from United States Agency for International Development (USAID). The project is implemented in close collaboration with the Federal Ministry of Health (FMOH), regional health bureaus (RHBs), and the respective health facilities.
Key to the success of any health systems strengthening project is whether it effects broad, sustainable, institutional change. Using Electronic Pharmacy Dispensing Data for Surveillance of Outpatient Antibiotic Consumption and Monitoring of Antibiotic Prescribing Practices at District and Provincial Hospitals in the South African Public Sector
The primary aim of this study was to assess the feasibility of using electronic pharmacy dispensing data extracted from RxSolution® for the surveillance of outpatient (ambulatory) antibiotic consumption and monitor antibiotic prescribing practices at district and provincial hospitals in public health facilities in North West Province, South Africa, between April 2013 and March 2015. This was an exploratory project to develop hypotheses on the volume of antibiotics used and prescribing patterns.

Inefficient and irrational use of medicines is a well-documented problem in both developed and developing countries. It leads to cost increases and adverse clinical effects for patients. The inappropriate use of medicine can be reduced if health care professionals involved in the different aspects of medicine use promote good practices for medicine management and use. An appropriate forum for the development and implementation of medicine policies is the Drug and Therapeutics Committee (DTC).
In Mozambique, the establishment of hospital DTCs was officially requested by the Ministério da Saúde (MISAU) (Ministry of Health) in the document The Departamento de Farmacia Hospitalar (DFH) (Department of Hospital Pharmacy) in the Direcção Nacional de Assistência Médica (National Directorate of Medical Assistance) of MISAU also took on the establishment of hospital DTCs as a priority intervention to improve the appropriate use of medicines at the hospital level. SIAPS has provided technical assistance to assist hospitals in establishing DTCs to improve medicine use, and in the collection and analysis of medicine use information for decision making as part of its support to counterparts in the pharmaceutical sector.
